“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever! Amen. II Peter 3:18
Our church softball team won the consolation championship at the end of the year tournament. That means they took 5th place. Jason Reck (Manager, President, and Owner) did a good job with his troops. They played together, and even got to hear a Gospel message as the teams gathered for opening ceremonies.
The speaker asked the players if they knew what their pastor was trying to do…and if they were helping him accomplish his goals. As we walked away, Sean noted that he was uncertain about my purpose for our church. I appreciated his honesty. Let me answer by directing us to page two of the Church Constitution presently under construction.
On page two, under Article II - Purpose, we find these words: We exist to glorify God and advance His Kingdom by making disciples. We envision being a caring family of growing Christians reflecting Christ’s love. The ministries of Redeemer Baptist Church focus on five important areas related to Christian growth. Worship - Acknowledge God’s Presence (Psalm 96:9) / Word - Learn God’s Truth (II Timothy 3:16-17) / Wait [prayer] - Enlist God’s Power (Ephesians 6:18) / Witness - Proclaim God’s Salvation (I Peter 3:15) / Work - Serve Your Savior (Mark 10:45)
We encourage growth in these foundational practices in the life of a Christian.
A friend from another state was recently visiting with our family. He talked about his church and what they needed as a congregation. It struck me how he believed that each person needed to work on their own devotional life. He thought that if that happened, they would see growth and that any issues they may struggle with would be graciously handled.
I agree that personal transformation through Jesus Christ relates a great deal to church health. For that reason, I want us to continue to promote and focus on and improve on the 5 W’s. This needs to happen individually and as a church.
I sincerely trust that God will use me to help you (Sean), and others grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
In Christ,
Pastor Lerud
