“Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.” Ephesians 6:24
Peter denied our Lord with the words, “I am not.” Then the rooster crowed! After Jesus died on the cross, was buried, and resurrected, He reinstated Peter. Jesus asked Peter, “…do you truly love me more than these?” (Jesus was referring to Peter’s fishing equipment and his worldly endeavors.) Peter responded to Jesus with, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Peter seemed irritated when Jesus asked him the same question three times. He was hurt because he thought that Jesus should believe him when he told Him that he loved Him. Do you think Jesus was right in questioning Peter? Should He question your love for Him?
When our kids were young we used to go fishing at a small pond. We had a great time. I would bait the hook and the kids would get after it. Sometimes we would catch a bass or a perch. Sometimes we just drowned worms!
The fishing hole was a little bit out of town, and basically in a farmer’s back yard. He stocked the pond and graciously allowed us to pass the time there.
This summer we plan to learn more about fishing during our Wednesday evening Bible study and prayer time at church. Our focus is on evangelism and prayer. We want to improve our skills at becoming ‘fisher’s of men.’
Although we will focus on how to reach out with the Gospel during that time, we will also consider how to reach in. Not only do we need to go to our neighbors, but do we also need to catch some who are in our backyard?
Jesus questioned the commitment of one of his closest followers. Jesus was leaving and He needed solid followers to carry on ‘His fishing business.’ Would He have faithful people taking over the reigns?
“Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” That is what Peter said. Is that what you say? And if so, are you also irritated when your commitment to Jesus is questioned? He needs ‘fisher’s of men.’ Do you love Him enough to be one?
