“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: First for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” Romans 1:16

A missionary was making his way through a thick jungle when, suddenly, he was face-to-face with a ferocious lion. “I’m going to have you for lunch,” the lion roared, “so you better prepare yourself for death.” Hearing this, the missionary immediately assumed a kneeling position, covered his eyes with his hands and began to pray with great intensity. Hearing nothing further from the lion, he opened his eyes and took a quick peek through his fingers. He was amazed to see that the lion was also kneeling, with his front paws over his eyes. The missionary breathed a deep sigh of relief, then raised his eyes to the heavens and said, “Thank you, Lord, for letting my words of prayer melt this wild beast’s heart and cause him to repent.” Whereupon, the lion dropped his paws and said, “Quiet please! I’m saying ‘Grace.’”

It sounded like that missionary found himself on a dangerous path. Maybe you have been on roads that you were in a hurry to get off of. I want to tell you about one that can lead people away from danger. It is called, The Roman Road.

Another missionary, named the Apostle Paul, wrote a letter from Corinth to the believers in Rome. He was on his third missionary journey at the time. He had hoped to travel to Rome and then to Spain, but first needed to go to Jerusalem to deliver money he had collected for the church.

The central argument of the book of Romans outlines and explains the eternal plan of God for the salvation of sinners. The book’s thesis statement (1:16-17) alerts readers to the central place that the righteousness of God occupies in this plan - the righteousness that God both demands in obedience and offers as a free gift in Christ, received by faith.

The Roman Road is a series of verses taken from the Book of Romans. Listen to some of them: Romans 3:10, 12 – “There is none righteous, no, not one….there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”; Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”; Romans 14:12 – “Every one of us shall give account of himself to God.’” (Ask me for the complete listing and I will give you a Roman Road tract.)

We will be going through the book of Romans beginning in October during our worship service. Why not study through Romans over the next several months individually or as a family? And if you know someone who’s walking down a path leading to danger, this would be a good time to show them, The Roman Road.

The world is sleeping in the dark,
That the church can’t fight, cause it’s asleep in the light,
How can you be so dead, when you’ve been so well fed,
