“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19
I stopped at a bait shop on the Monday after the fishing opener. I asked an employee if it had been a busy weekend for them. He said that they had not been very busy. He thought it was a little too cold for everyone. He was probably right…although I was a little surprised. Are we not from Minnesota? How is it that a little less than ’sunny and seventy degrees’ put a damper on a day diehards look forward to all year!
Another fishing spectacular is in the works. Maybe the masses will come out for this event. The last weekend in June (24-26), Terry Baxter will be at Redeemer Baptist Church. Those who have gone to the Men’s Retreat with us at Village Creek Bible Camp know of Terry and his excellent Bible teaching. He is also an avid outdoorsmen who has done some deep-sea fishing in Alaska.
The weekend will include -
Friday Night: Fishing instruction from a local expert; Fun and friendly fishing related competitions; Good food; A message from Terry.
Saturday: Brunch; A message from Terry; Fishing opportunities for those interested.
Sunday: An opportunity to hear a Biblical message from Terry during Sunday School and the Worship Service.
Bring a friend and be a part of this ‘fishing weekend.’ Make an effort to bring the person you have been praying for. Consider the opportunity you have to take the next step with someone who has been on your heart for years. Hopefully it will not be ‘too cold’ for you to invite someone.
Years ago, Jesus was looking for some fishermen. I am not sure what the weather was like that day. From all indications, it must have been good.
As He was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
I do not know if they had ‘Openers,’ in those days. For these men and others, this was probably an every-day, all-year event for them. Consider the sacrifice involved in what Jesus wanted from these men when He said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
He did not stop with Peter and Andrew. Going on from there, He saw another set of brothers named James and John. They were with their father, also in the midst of their work. As they prepared their nets, Jesus called them.
These two sets of brothers responded to Jesus and immediately began following him. They had already been fishermen, but soon they would be catching men - persuading them to also follow Jesus, the Messiah.
Can that happen today? There is a need for those who follow Jesus to help others do the same. We have a great opportunity to help others be in a position to hear about the Savior and follow Him. Sometimes the temperature outside keeps people away from what could have been a fruitful fishing experience. Sometimes the temperature of hearts has a similar effect.
Will you be a fisher-of-men?
